CINCINNATI – Today the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) board voted unanimously to observe Juneteenth on Friday, June 19 as a paid holiday for Metro and Access employees.
The holiday is being observed as part of Metro’s ongoing efforts to work towards a more inclusive, diverse and equitable society. Juneteenth is an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865.
Metro and Access’ administrative office, sales office and Customer Care Center will be closed in observation of the holiday. Metro’s service will continue to operate on its current modified Saturday schedule on June 19.
“Metro staff will be observing Juneteenth as a day to not only celebrate the emancipation of African Americans in our county, but to reflect on our mission and our commitment towards helping create a more just and inclusive society,” said Darryl Haley, Metro CEO & General Manager. “As a public transportation system we are committed to leveling the playing field for all citizens by improving access to jobs, healthcare, education and expanding the quality of life choices in our region.”
Metro is a non-profit, tax-funded public service of the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority, providing about 13.5 million rides per year.
